We came into it knowing we’d be getting new films from filmmaking heavyweights like Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Greta Gerwig (Little Women), and their efforts did not fail to live up to the hype. Well, okay – it does a bit. It’s a scathing, brilliant class-study, and a gripping film with one of the most impressive dramatic arcs I’ve seen.
The “gangster cool” of Tarantino and Scorsese wouldn’t exist without French master Melville, whose silent-but-deadly hitman Jef Costello is spotted by witnesses after a public murder, leading to a brilliant final image with white gloves, a piano and a revolver. Scorsese’s 3½-hour saga is based on the story of real-life low-level mobster Frank Sheeran (played, superbly, by Robert De Niro), who claims to have killed Jimmy Hoffa (a marvelous Al Pacino), the onetime Teamsters president who disappeared in 1975. ‘Reservoir Dogs’ (1992) – Quentin Tarantino, Tarantino’s breakthrough gangster flick is still as snappy as ever, following the botched heist of Mr. White, Mr. Orange, Mr. The film has been lauded by critics, but Sandler’s performance in particular has been celebrated as a triumph.
