| KYODO NEWS, Oct 18, 2020 Shuri, the name of the former capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom, was originally built in the 1300’s as the administration center and residence of many Ryukyu Kings. The Una is covered with bright tiles called sen, which functioned as markers for the placement of officials lined up for ceremonies. The second time we just ventured around the grounds (all free; you only pay for the actual Castle) on the paths we couldn’t go on in a stroller. You do pay for parking in 2 hour blocks, but it wasn’t a lot of money! Walking the streets of Shuri sparks curiosity, looking into the everyday lives of the Okinawans and visiting historic monuments and old ruins, along with utaki, sacred prayer sites significant in the spiritualism of Okinawa scattered around the area.
